Background
Community Youth Development Trust is a community-based organization whose mission is to empower youth
in Matabeleland South with Knowledge and skills for making a difference in economic and social discourse. CYDT
is committed to ensure young women and men of between 18 to 35 years benefit from sustainable development
both from local to national level. Our work is rooted in governance and human rights framework which considers
challenging inequality and injustices as central to inclusive development. CYDT’s work empowers young people
to negotiate for more equitable benefit sharing regimes, influence decision making that impact their lives in local
government processes. We are guided by three inter-related thematic areas namely; Local and National Level
Advocacy (civil rights to influence decision making) Sexual Reproductive and Health Right (socio-economic rights)
and Youth Livelihood Support (youth empowerment).
Rationale of the call
Young people are one of the important resources in strengthening democratic local governance in Zimbabwe.
Their effective potentials can be utilized from all levels of local government that include planning,
implementation and evaluation of the projects. Having noted that; despite their important role in local
government processes, young people remain at the receiving end, with less to no involvement in some cases;
CYDT designed a project that sought to bring youths into active engagement with their leaders in promoting
democratic governance in Bulilima, Gwanda and Mangwe. The project has been running since September 2018
and has managed to influence certain milestones that makes it easy for youths to find their way into the realm
of local governance and community development. For the project to yield impact, the organization adopted a
three-lens approach to youth participation which informed the combination of a Human Rights Based Approach,
Engagement Streams Framework and Appreciative Inquiry as design methods to achieve intended objectives.
