Cleaning the environment is critical in protecting people`s health and saving our communities; regular clean up campaigns and the collection of refuse by local authorities reduces pollution while protecting natural resources like water and minerals that are found in Gwanda and other areas of Matabeleland South province.

A clean environment has the capacity to also attract business investors which then advances the economy of our local communities. This is the reason local authorities are required to regularly collect refuse using advanced refuse collection trucks.

In Gwanda District, while the Municipality has made significant strides to improve refuse collection, the garbage trucks being used are those with an open truck-bed which means that the garbage can be blown away by the wind on to the road. This then affects the cleaning process since these open trucks can drop garbage on the ground instead of effectively carrying litter to its intended destination.

Speaking to CYDT, Gwanda youth said the failure to effectively collect refuse collection and the use of open trucks to collect garbage could become a health hazard for the town.

“As the capital of Matabeleland South, we are the centre of attraction; this means that our town must always be clean and attractive. Local authorities can ensure that by purchasing effective material and trucks to collect garbage,” one youth told CYDT .

The youth went on to say that; “Open trucks are simple not good enough. If we are to achieve a smart town status, we need advanced trucks that are well designed for garbage collection.”

Another youth said, the purchasing of garbage trucks like the rear garbage truck was critical in ensuring effective service delivery as compared to the open trucks that are being used by the Municipality of Gwanda.

Meanwhile, the council has been encouraging residents to pay their bills on time which would enable the council  to deliver improved service delivery.
